This mask made of particularly beautiful wood was acquired by the previous owner in Bali around 1978.
It depicts a rakshasa, a type of demon, which in Hindu mythology are usually enemies and opponents of humans. Rakshasas have a fearsome appearance which is supposed to indicate their character, but there are exceptions in the stories according to which rakshasas can also be cultivated and good-looking.
