Janger Dancer

This bust of a female Janger dancer was my very first Balinese wood carving. I received it as a gift and you could say that it was the beginning of my collection. But it took a few years before I started collecting more carvings.

The bust represents a Janger dancer. Janger is a traditional Balinese dance, the movements of the dancers appear very complicated and demanding.

Busts or statues of Janger dancers like this one are very common. The carving here has been covered with a very thick layer of lacquer, so everything looks very smooth. Unfortunately, in the past I have cleaned them with an unsuitable agent. This resulted in a loss of color in some areas of the face.
So this bust here is a bit average, and today I no longer collect lacquered or painted carvings.
