If you think this figurine is colored, you are wrong. All the difference in color tone comes from the variation of carving. Master carver Puja combined smoothness with rough surface and deep carving lines with flat ones to that exceptional result.
There are so many Hanuman carvings out there. But even there are good looking ones, most are cheaper tourist souvenirs. It takes a little more to make a carving a piece of art, so I'm glad to have found this statue.

Now let’s have a short story about cleaning. When I got the carving it was a disaster at first. I didn't know earlier that it was sold by a chain smoker. It was smelling terribly. No chance to just put it in a living room. To make things worse the previous owner treated the wood's surface with a very sticky and smeary wax.
First I cleaned the figurine with white spirit, but that didn't bring much effect, but high purity isopropyl alcohol could get the wax off the wood. That alone took about 12 hours of work! But to get rid of the smell the figurine needed ozone treatment, not only one but even two times. After that and in between I had to clean the item again and again. Finally oiling. There is still a very light smell, but you won't notice when your nose isn't that close to it.
That was a story about turning a disaster into something good. There is always a risk of getting an item from a smoker. It is therefore all the more important to clarify this detail before making any purchase.
