The year of manufacture is unknown. However, it could be that the artist was already active in the 1940s, as I have seen old figures on the Internet by a carver of the same name. What else is to say? Kendang is the drum of a Gamelan orchestra, typical traditional music of Bali. I wanna be honest with you, I don't like Gamelan music that much. It's so fast paced and every instrument seems to play at the same time, so frantic. You really have to be a fan of this to listen to it for hours…

After I started collecting Balinese carvings I soon wanted to collect just gods, demons and so on. They will have a story behind them, not just a guy sitting around telling nothing. But when I saw this Kendang player, I couldn't resist buying. His face is so lovely, the wood is of such high quality and it's surface is so smooth.
But there is another reason I bought the figurine. It was sold by “Hamburg Leuchtfeuer”, a charitable organisation which is running a hospice and other projects for people who have severe illnesses. Someone donated this figurine to the charity shop, and with the proceeds of the sale they can finance their work. I have such joy looking at this nice Kendang player and someone I don't even know will get help therefore. Really heartwarming.
