Kumbhakarna with Lakshmana, Hanuman and other Vanara

 measurements: 40x22,5x12 cm
weight: 2690 gr

There are several important characters shown here. The very big one and main charakter is Kumbhakarna, he is holding Sugriva in his hands (the one in horizontal position). On the left top is Nala, you can see the flame-like headdress. Hanuman is on the top right. On the lower right there is Kapi Menda, look at his goat-like horns. In the lower left stands Lakshmana, brother of Rama. There is another Vanara depicted on the very low left side. I think he is a random guy but if you know his name, please send me an email.
The story behind is that Sugriva was taken by Kumbhakarna during a contest of strength between the two. Sugriva's Vanara allies tried to help him and punched Kumbakarna as you can see here. Sugriva was nearly killed but Hanuman saved his life by pushing Kumbhakarna against a rock. Finally, Lakshmana killed the giant by shooting an arrow at him. Kumbhakarna was a brother of Ravana and fought against Rama in the big battle of Ramayana epic.

The woodcarving is in medium condition. The previous owner did some really bad repairs of broken parts using universal glue. But this woodcarving is great anyway. Everything is made out of a single log of wood, and it's so three dimensional. There are so many arms and legs and parts of clothing to be shaped and carved free.
The grade of detail may be average here, but I like the furry structure of the apes, they don't have just flat skin. Must have been quite a long work for the carver to finish this.
