Rangda, Disciples and Demon

measurements: 36x15x11 cm
weight: 1850 gr

This carving of very dark and solid ebony wood shows Rangda, with two of her disciples, called Sisia, standing to her left and right. The demon at the bottom is not yet identified, I will gladly accept your advice on this.
The carving comes from the estate of a German who lived for a long time with his wife and daughter in Indonesia and was active there in business. His really particularly kind daughter runs a web store in Germany and offered me many of the most beautiful carvings made of ebony and other woods. To my greatest regret, I only found room for the figure of Rangda and love this piece all the more for it.
It was important to both the seller and her elderly mother that the carving goes into good hands. Therefore, I keep this wish in my heart and would like to take this opportunity to thank the charming Mona for her trust.

Rangda

 dimensions: 31x16x10,5 cm

This figurine looks impressive. Rangda is always depicted ugly and frightening, no exception here. Rangda shows up as being massive, bulky and powerful. The carving's wood is heavy and of high density, no visible wood pores. There are plenty of details all over, just like the artist wanted to have Rangda look like being painted.
I don't know anything about the carvings background, when or how the figurine came to Germany. Looking at it I think it must have been made around the 1930s.

There are some parts missing, especially parts of the fingers and fingernails. But even the fact that this is clearly visible, it doesn't matter to me at all as this is an impressive figurine anyhow. Breaking lines and lost parts belong to the life of a woodcarving, imperfections give a very special character, as long as the overall shape is still fine.
