Vishnu and Garuda

Vishnu and Garuda are some of the most carved characters. But if you are somewhat interested in Indonesian art you simply cannot get around Garuda. He is the national symbol of Indonesia, he is depicted on coins, flags and many other things of daily life.
Most of the carvings available are way too high to fit in my collections shelf, and first of all, they are always damaged or quite ugly in my opinion. I was happy to have finally found the nice looking figurine you see above. It's done with a lot of details, like wrinkles in the extremities bends, Garuda's claws go deep in the ground, floral elements on the base and Vishnu really has got a sweet and well done face. Unfortunately, one day in the past, Garuda lost his tongue, which is a very common damage in figurines of this type.
