Bhima and Arimbi

crocodile wood

If you think that two men are depicted here, you are wrong. Bhima is holding his wife in his arms. This carving is very unique and in a way very funny. Putu Pada must have had tears in his eyes when he made it.
According to the Mahabharata, Bhima had several wives, Arimbi being one of them. Since she was a rakshasa, a kind of demon, Bhima had enchanted her so that he saw in her the figure of a beautiful woman. Thus, Arimbi was able to win Bhima over and even have children with him.
