Woman with Kendi set

 measurements: 31,5x18,5x11,5 cm
weight: 1570 gr

This beautiful figurine of a woman with a Kendi set was purchased in Jakarta in about 1960 by a German cargo officer. He sailed regularly on the trade route Germany-Indonesia with one of the last general cargo freighters of Hapag Lloyd, the MS Bavaria, and brought this statue from one of his trips.
The pictures speak for themselves. The unfortunately unknown carver could hardly have worked better, except for a slight inaccuracy in the proportion of the hands. The dress inspires with drapery and almost exuberant details. The beautiful face of the woman is here not yet "Europeanized", as unfortunately later often usual. The details on the body show everything from the fingernails to the toenails to the protrusion of the elbow. The wall is also worked out in all details.
Although I do not otherwise collect images of daily life, this statue has a special place in my collection - and in my heart.
