Mermaid

Mermaids do not appear in all narratives of the Ramayana, but rather in those of Southeast Asia. There they often remain nameless. The mermaid Suvannamaccha is the daughter of Ravana and meets Hanuman in the story, originally to prevent the building of a bridge to Lanka.
Whether the statue here is Suvannamaccha or an unnamed mermaid is unclear. At the very least, it lacks clear identifying features such as a crown or similar.

The statue is of excellent quality. The wood used is among the densest and heaviest of all the pieces in my collection, resulting in a particularly heavy weight of over 3 kg. It must have been a great challenge for the carver to work such solid wood. The exact age is unknown, but the 1950s to 1970s can be assumed.
The previous owner gave this statue to me as he had to give up his collection for personal reasons. It is sad to have to end a hobby. However, I am delighted to be able to give this extraordinary statue a new home.
